Jiayuguan, next to the Gobi desert

The city is an ancient Han Chinese outpost. The Great Wall once extended beyond here but during the first years of the Ming Dynasty a fortress was built. There are thousands of ancient tombs left in the desert, just like the dazzling pearls embedded in the Gobi desert.

The Jiayu Pass Fort

Built in 1372, the fort was dubbed the "Impregnable Defile Under Heaven". Although the Chinese often controlled territories far beyond Jiayuguan, this was the last major stronghold of the empire to the west.

The Brick mural tomb of Wei and Jin Dynasty

This large-scaled series of murals is the encyclopedia on the Silk Road, which has provided a reliable material basis to study politics, economy, military affairs, culture, folklore, farming and stockbreeding, diplomacy, climate, etc.
